Jackie & Zach

June 25, 2022

If there was one thing we could choose when thinking about our wedding, it would be for everyone to have a really fun, stress-free time. We couldn’t think of a better place to do that than Martha’s Vineyard, where we can spend all day at the beach and throw a big party at night with all of the people we love. Zach and I fell in love with the Vineyard because of its effortless ability to combine nature, sea and elegance all into one. We can’t wait to show you around and hope that you’ll love it as much as we do.

For those that are not familiar, Martha’s Vineyard is a Massachusetts island off the coast of Cape Cod that is only accessible by boat or plane. Although you can bring your car on the ferry out of Woods Hole, MA, there is also the option to park your car on the Cape (or other locations depending on what ferry you take) and come without a car. If you are staying for a few days, we do recommend bringing a car as there is a lot to see and it’s much easier to get around with one.

JUNE 2022 UPDATE:

I believe the majority of you have now found accommodations and have made travel plans, but in the event that you haven’t or need help, please feel free to reach out to me (Jackie). I’d love to help.

One thing to note when coming to the Vineyard is that it is an incredibly naturally beautiful island with heavy woodlands and tall grasses. It’s known to be an area where ticks are prevalent so please plan on bringing bug spray with you and make sure to do tick checks daily or at the end of the weekend. We will have bug spray/tick repellant in the bathrooms at the wedding in case you forget.

If you have any questions or need any help with accommodations, travel or anything else, please feel free to contact us at thevineyardwedding@gmail.com.

A fun fact – our save-the-date is a spin on a parking ticket Zach and I received when trying to catch a sunset in Menemsha. Parking was nowhere to be found (legally) and we only had a few minutes to spare before grabbing a lobster at Larsen’s and a seat on the jetty in time for the sun to go down. The ticket had a really cool outline of the Vineyard and felt fitting being as though it’s one of our favorite memories. Worth it, to say the least.

- Jackie & Zach

The Couple

Jackie & Zach

Zach and I met one conspicuous NYC night on New Year’s Eve. I had made a last minute decision to throw a small party in our 686 square foot, two-bedroom apartment I shared with my roommate Cait. Since most of our good friends already had plans, we scrolled through the Rolodex to see if anyone at all was willing to come. Hillary, a friend who I had just recently met at the time and who was also a Colorado Buff, said she wanted to come and would ask her friends she was supposed to hangout with if they wanted to join as well. Turns out they did and Zach was one of them (visiting a good friend Sarah and up from D.C.). Zach tried kissing me when the ball dropped only to receive a cheek instead and months of resistance. He asked me to be his girlfriend that June (25th to be exact) and I said yes, but with the condition that I needed to have one last fun summer in Montauk. Shockingly he agreed to this rude request and kept persisting on. He waited for me to catch up and once I did, the rest was history.

For those who don’t know, Zach and I both attended the University of Colorado at the same time and never knew each other, yet have the same groups of friends. We couldn’t be more excited to have all our favorite people in one place and for our worlds to finally collide.

Travel Information

Fly

In our opinion, if you’re coming from the tristate area (JFK & LGA), Boston (BOS) or D.C. (DCA), flying is the easiest option, but can be the most expensive. From NYC, you are in the air for about 45 minutes before landing at one of the easiest airports to make your way through (MVY). Most times, you don’t even walk through the airport upon landing and just walk out the side-gate from the tarmac.

If you are traveling from further than the northeast, there are connecting flights to MVY or you have the option to fly into Boston (BOS) and either rent a car, take a car service/Uber or hop on the Peter Pan bus from the airport to the Woods Hole, MA Steamship Authority Ferry Terminal. From there you can take the ferry to the island with or without a car (if you’ve rented one). See the ferry section for more info regarding the ferry.

Rental cars are available at the the MVY airport through Hertz, Budget and Avis.

As with all MV things, we recommend booking flights as early as possible to avoid price increases, although there will usually always be some flights available if you’re willing to pay more.

Find Flights

Drive

Although flying may be the quickest and easiest way to get to the Vineyard, we recommend bringing a car if you have one and if you will be staying for more than a day or two on the island. The island is big enough that you’ll need a car to see all of the great spots and be able to access them easily. Although there are public buses, Ubers and taxis on the island, they can add up to be more expensive than bringing a car and can be difficult to access certain spots (like the cliffs in Aquinnah). Also, rental cars tend to be incredibly expensive if you rent them the day-of, e.g. $250+ per day, so paying the price to bring your car on the ferry is worth it.

To bring your car on the island, drive to Woods Hole, MA and take the Steamship Authority Ferry. Multiple ferries run everyday, but since it’s the only way to bring a car on the island, ferries are almost completely booked by April. We recommend booking as early as the end of January. Reservations usually open around January 19th. One-way tickets are $17 per passenger and around $135 per car (depending on the size).

If you drive to the ferry and decide to not bring your car, you can park in the overnight parking lot for about $15 a day and take the shuttle to the ferry, which runs every 15 minutes or so. Reservations are not required and you can walk-on if you do not bring a car, but to be safe, it’s best to make them anyway.

Find Ferries

Ferry

As mentioned in the drive section, if you decide to not bring a car onto the island or don’t have one, you can either drive to the Steamship Authority Ferry in Wood Hole, MA and leave your car in overnight parking for $15 a day or you can take the Peter Pan bus (from NYC or Boston Logan) that will drop you off directly at the ferry terminal. There are multiple ferries that travel to Martha’s Vineyard, but Steamship Authority from Woods Hole, MA is the fastest (45 minutes) and most commonly used. It drops you off either at Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs, depending on what time you chose, but both towns are basically equidistant to Edgartown and you can easily grab an Uber from there to your destination. The window for buying Steamship Authority tickets opens on January 25, 2022. I suggest buying them as soon as possible.

Another ferry option is the Rhode Island Fast Ferry that leaves from Quonset, RI. There is parking at the terminal and the trip is one hour and 45 minutes.

A third option would be to take the Seastreak Ferry This ferry leaves either from New Bedford, MA or straight from NYC/NJ. The ferry from New Bedford is about one hour long and the one from NYC/NJ is about a six hour ferry ride. Keep in mind the NYC/NJ ferry only leaves Friday night and returns Sunday. For NJ wedding attendees, this is the same ferry that leaves from Atlantic Highlands/Highlands for NYC, but continues onto the Vineyard.

If you’re staying in Edgartown and want a straight shot there (instead of the Woods Hole ferry to Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs), there’s also the option to take the Falmouth-Edgartown ferry from Falmouth, MA.

Accommodations

The Vineyard consists of six towns and is generally a small island, but we recommend staying in either Edgartown or Chilmark, if possible.

Edgartown is a main town on the Vineyard and everything is easily accessible by foot. Our welcome dinner is located here and we will also be providing transportation from Edgartown to the wedding venue, which is located in Chilmark. More information to come regarding transportation details.

Chilmark is also a great option if you would like something more remote and rural. It’s where the farmland meets the sea.

While Aquinnah, West Tisbury, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven are beautiful locations, they will be quite far from the wedding related activities on the island so keep that in mind when booking.

Renting a private home is a great option for groups. Airbnb, VRBO, and Homeaway.com all offer several listings on the Island, as do local real estate companies Conroy & Company, Tea Lane Associates, Point B Realty and Sandpiper Realty.

Below please find options for hotels in all ranges in both Edgartown and Chilmark. Note that the Edgartown hotels are towards the top of the list with the third to last being in Aquinnah and the last two being the Chilmark options.

The Harborview
The Harborview

The Harborview is one of the more upscale hotels on the island. It historically hosted Steven Spielberg and the entire cast and crew of Jaws, but it is conveniently located in Edgartown with beautiful views of the harbor and lighthouse. Wedding Transportation & Attire

Transportation

WEDDING TRANSPORTATION

Shuttles will be provided on the day of the wedding to the Allen Farm at 3:15pm sharp. Please make sure not to be late.

The pick-up locations with be at the Harborview Hotel and behind the Old Whaling Church on Main Street in Edgartown.

Returns to both the Harborview Hotel and the Old Whaling Church will depart the Allen Farm at 10:00pm, 11:00pm and 12:30am.

If you are not staying in Edgartown proper or at the Harborview Hotel and will not be able to make it to the pick-up spot, please let me know and we can try to provide information regarding taxis and private car services. Ubers are also readily available in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. If you bring your car on-island, there will also be parking at the wedding if you would rather drive and can get yourself home safely.

ON-ISLAND TRANSPORTATION:

Once on-island, taxis and public transportation meet all arriving ferries and flights. It is also easy to get a taxi, Uber or rental car (keep in mind this option may be expensive) if you wish to explore the island on your own. Rental companies that offer cars on the Vineyard include Budget, Hertz, and Avis at the airport or you can rent them at Martha’s Vineyard Auto Rental at 11 N Water St, Edgartown, MA 02539, which you can walk to if you are staying in Edgartown.

One of our favorite ways to get around the island is to bike. The island is full of bike paths that make it easy, fun and safe to travel this way. There are a number of bike rental shops in the 3 main towns on the island, but we usually tend to rent from Martha’s Vineyard Bike Rentals at 1 Main St, Edgartown, MA 02539. Keep in mind, if you are staying at a hotel, there’s a chance they may provide complimentary bicycles. Many on the island do.

Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority also provides easy transport between all towns on the island. There are regular shuttles running daily between Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, Edgartown, and Chilmark. Rates between towns are $1.25 per person and a full day’s pass is $8. You can easily access the schedules by downloading the TransLoc app.
